Millions of Aussies admit to sneaky streaming tactics

It’s no secret that Australians love their subscription TV.

In fact, the average Aussie streamer spends $39 per month on streaming services, according to new research from Finder.

At the same time, many of us are freeloaders and mooch off of someone else to get our fix.

A Finder nationally representative survey of 1,062 respondents revealed a whopping 40% of Aussies admit to using a family member or friend's password for their streaming service.

That's an incredible 8 million Aussies mooching off someone.

Mark Neilsen, streaming expert at Finder said sharing subscriptions can be a great way to save some cash.

“Just make sure you keep track of who is paying for what, and who has login privileges.

“Keep an eagle eye out for special deals and bargains. For example, Disney Plus is usually $11.99 a month, but for a limited time in September, you can subscribe for just $1.99 for 1 month – that’s an 83% discount."

Aussies are most likely to freeload off someone else's Netflix account (30%), followed by Disney+ (16%), Stan (13%), and Amazon Prime Video (10%).

Gen Z are far and away the most likely to freeload, with a staggering 76% saying they use a service that isn't in their name, compared to 17% of baby boomers.

“If you don’t have the luxury of sharing subscriptions, there is a way to get nearly a year of free streaming.

“Simply follow the free trials. Finder analysis from June shows this could get you just under a year of free streaming.

"Finder’s guides can help you make the most out of your streaming subscriptions – here you can find where and how to watch your favourite shows and movies.

“Remember to cancel any services you aren’t currently using – you can easily join back up to them again if you find a show or movie you want to watch.”

For a limited time, Aussies can subscribe to Disney Plus for only $1.99 for 1 month. The discount is available until Tuesday, 20 September.
